What Song Was That?

Our House - Madness

“Hey JACK, can you tell me what song you played earlier?  It was talking about a House in the Street,…and there were some kids thrown in there too?”  Yep, here’s another song we’ve received calls about.  (It actually played earlier today around 11:30am)  So, to help edify (Wow, I hope I used that word right) you about some of JACK-fm’s more unique songs, I thought I’d throw down some info for ya.

Our House by Madness

If you like No Doubt, you’ll love these guys.  From what I’ve read on the always truthful Wikipedia, they’re a 7 member group from Camden Town, London, which formed in 1976.  When Madness first released this song it was on things called records.  These were smaller records called 45’s.  (Because you’d run them at 45 rpms on a record player, Crazy I know)  The “A” side featured "Our House" and the b-side had an instrumental called, “Walking With Mr. Wheeze."  If you dug the British/Ska sound in the late 70’s early 80’s you might know their other songs such as One Step Beyond, and…..well.  That’s really about it.  Oh, good news.  They have reformed (With most of their original members) and are still touring today.

Our House Lyrics from eLyrics

Father wears his Sunday best
Mother's tired she needs a rest
The kids are playing up downstairs
Sister's sighing in her sleep
Brother's got a date to keep
He can't hang around
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our ...
Our house it has a crowd
There's always something happening
And it's usually quite loud
Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down
And a mess is not allowed
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our ...
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our ...
Something tells you that you've got to get away from it
Father gets up late for work
Mother has to iron his shirt
Then she sends the kids to school
Sees them off with a small kiss
She's the one they're going to miss
In lots of ways
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our ...
I remember way back then when everything was true and when
We would have such a very good time such a fine time
Such a happy time
And I remember how we'd play simply waste the day away
Then we'd say nothing would come between us two dreamers
Father wears his Sunday best
Mother's tired she needs a rest
The kids are playing up downstairs
Sister's sighing in her sleep
Brother's got a date to keep
He can't hang around
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our ...
Our house, was our castle and our keep
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, that was where we used to sleep
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our street
...
